Our Story

Abe Noe-Hays as Keynote speaker: Nutrients in a Circular Economy (Australia 2023)

In 2019, with rising concern surrounding traditional wastewater treatment systems and mounting demand for distributed solutions, Abe Noe-Hays and Kim Nace realized the time had come to develop economically & environmentally viable technologies that would expand opportunities for sustainable sanitation. Backed by years of experience, an R&D-focused team, and a global support network, Brightwater Tools had a good head-start. And luckily, they had plenty of urine for testing purposes…

Nope, Vermonters don’t usually stockpile urine, but back in 2012 Brightwater Tools’ founders, Abe and Kim, created the Rich Earth Institute, a non-profit organization that manages the nation’s first community-scale urine nutrient recycling program. “Pee-cycling” has become a success story for innovative, local sustainability efforts. And the Rich Earth Institute has also gained respect internationally as a knowledge hub in regenerative sanitation – amassing a wealth of research & policy experience, facilitating myriad connections among experts & practitioners, and revealing the true demand for natural fertilizer.
