From Flush to Field

Combine our groundbreaking equipment into an onsite wastewater treatment system or purchase them separately

Building-Scale Treatment Train

Brightwater Tools’ equipment works together as a Treatment Train to process waste into a concentrated, sanitized fertilizer.
1
Collection Fixtures
Vacuum flush toilets & waterless urinals collect high strength toilet water, which then moves through a digester.
2
Freeze Concentrator*
separates wastewater into two streams: non-potable water for reuse and a nutrient-rich concentrate.
*patented
3
Pasteurizer*
destroys pathogens
*patented
4
Carbon Filter
removes pharmaceuticals
5
Concentrated sanitized fertilizer
is ready to be distributed to farms
The Brightwater Tools treatment train is automated, monitored remotely, and requires minimal maintenance.

It creates cost savings for developers by: (1) reducing water usage since water is recycled back to the building, and (2) eliminating costly sewer connection fees.

The Freeze Concentrator

How it Works

  • The Brightwater Tools’ patented Freeze Concentrator leverages the purely physical process of freezing to remove water and condense waste.
  • Inside the concentrator, batches of digested wastewater are partially frozen, resulting in the formation of pure ice crystals and a nutrient-rich concentrate.
  • After the concentrate is drained, the ice crystals are melted and the water is removed to be lightly treated and reused.
  • The resulting concentrate– retaining 90% of the total nutrients– can then be pasteurized, filtered, and used as fertilizer.

The Brightwater Advantage

Other techniques for concentrating wastewater can’t beat the natural, physical process of freezing. This unique technology benefits sustainable multi-family developers in several ways:

  • Processes blackwater
  • Energy efficient
  • Uses no harsh chemicals
  • Scalable to meet customer needs
  • Needs no active management
  • Doesn’t require stabilized nitrogen
"Any technology that can economically concentrate liquid wastewater for reduced transport costs will be in high demand."
-Peter Fiske, Director of NAWI, a Program supported by the U.S. Department of Energy

Rising Demand

The Freeze Concentrator has been deployed for use at the University of Michigan, and will be deployed next at installations in France, Switzerland, and Sweden. This technology has vast global market potential in settings with nutrient sensitive ecosystems and urban areas nearing or exceeding their regulatory limits for wastewater treatment.

The Pasteurizer

How It Works

  • The Brightwater Pasteurizer sanitizes, or removes pathogens, from source separated urine and/ or high strength wastewater.
  • The treated product meets US EPA requirements for use in agriculture.
  • Our pasteurizer’s patented heat exchange technology minimizes energy use and nutrient loss.
  • It is fully automated and can sanitize up to 150 gallons per day.
  • The Pasteurizer can be used individually or as part of the Brightwater Tools Treatment Train.

The Carbon Filter

How It Works

  • Granular activated carbon filtration removes organic micropollutants like PFAS & pharmaceuticals from liquid wastewater.
  • We’ve integrated this advanced treatment process into our nutrient recovery toolkit since it dramatically reduces the emission of contaminants to the natural environment.
  • The Carbon Filter can be purchased individually or used as part of the Brightwater Tools Treatment Train.
